UK Conservatives open party conference
02/10 19:03 CET
Britain's Conservative party has opened its annual conference in Manchester with a flurry of policy announcements and commitments by Prime Minister David Cameron to deal with debts, fix UK banks, and stay in the EU.
Inside the conference hall there have been displays of Tory unity, despite the right's impatience with Brussels, and a determination to continue with present policies to cut the deficit.
Outside there have been demonstrations against those cost-cutting policies by union members angry at the estimated 300,000 job losses that will result.
An estimated 35,000 people took to the streets.
Cameron insists if public spending is not cut interest rates will rise, hurting economic growth and job creation, but growth is already sluggish and his critics say the cuts are not helping.

Occupy! Manchester - 2nd October Tory Party Conference
Occupy Manchester | 21.09.2011 08:33 | Public sector cuts | Social Struggles | Sheffield
After the 'March for the Alternative' in London on March 26th, thousands of people joined the TUC 'Birmingham for the Alternative' march on the Lib Dem conference on Sunday September 18th. There was a wide range of trade union participation, especially from public sector unions who recently announced a new wave of national strikes for November 30th. Student activists were also present, with a banner drop by the National Campaign against Fees and Cuts reminding conference delegates of Nick Clegg's broken promises of opposing rises in tuition fees.
Plans for a third TUC demonstration, the Manchester 'March for the Alternative', are underway for the first day of the Conservative Party conference on October 2nd. Tens of thousands are expected to march past the conference centre and the 'ring of steel' around it, protesting against an agenda of cuts and austerity for the benefit of the rich. A coalition of anarchists, socialists, trade union activists, student unions and democracy campaigners, dubbed Occupy! Manchester, are also calling for an occupation of Albert Square, outside Manchester Town Hall, to create an assembly of protest on the doorstep of the Tory's conference, and a place for real debate and discussion about the alternatives.

Who are you and what are you planning to do?
The Occupy! Manchester organising group emerged with the specific aim of mobilising against the Conservative Party Conference, due to be held in Manchester in early October. It is made up of individuals from various groups in Manchester, and formed in response to a call to mobilise for a mass protest that would aim to involve people who may not otherwise have joined together in protest on the day.
